5 Questions to Ask Before Booking a Budget Photographer

Booking a photographer on a budget doesn't mean you have to skip due diligence. In fact, it's even more important to vet your suppliers when you're looking for a deal. Here are the 5 non-negotiable questions you must ask.

1. "Can I see a FULL gallery from a recent wedding?"

Anyone can get 5 good shots from an 8-hour day. You need to see how they handle the boring bits, the dark reception hall, and the chaotic family photos.

  • Red Flag: They refuse or only show you a "best of" slideshow.

2. "What happens if you get sick?"

Established studios have networks of associates. A solo budget photographer might not.

  • Green Flag: They have a written agreement with other local photographers to cover emergencies.

3. "Do you have public liability and professional indemnity insurance?"

Many venues require this. If your photographer doesn't have it, you might not be allowed to have them shoot at your venue.

  • Red Flag: "I don't need insurance, I'm careful."

4. "How do you back up my photos?"

Technology fails. Memory cards corrupt.

  • Green Flag: "I shoot to two cards simultaneously and back up to a hard drive and the cloud as soon as I get home."

5. "Are there any hidden costs?"

Travel, accommodation, VAT, extra hours, digital download fees... make sure the price you see is the price you pay.

Asking these questions shows the photographer that you are serious and helps build a relationship of trust. A professional will be happy to answer them!
