A shorter booking

What a half-day wedding photographer covers

What a half-day wedding photographer covers

A half day, in this reading, is a package whose own page states 4 or 5 hours. Most of those sit around £850. You'll find them from about £650 to £1,100, across 836 published prices.

Where the half-day figure comes from

The £850 figure is the middle of 836 packages whose own pages state 4 or 5 hours. Those pages are public photographer price lists, read on 4 October 2026. A booking of 1 or 2 hours sits around £450, from the same reading, limited to packages that stated those hours. Council fees in the Civic Centre table are Newcastle City Council's published fees. The package rules are set out on the price-survey method.

Put the timetable on paper first

Preparations at home, the ceremony, and portraits in the same place can fit inside five hours. A breakfast, speeches and an evening party need a longer booking, once the photographer's clock stops. Write the times before you ask for a price. Two example days show where the survey rows start to matter. The times are a worked example, not a claim about how long any registrar takes.

A short morning. The photographer arrives at noon, the ceremony is at 1pm, a short group is done by 1.40pm, portraits run until 2.15pm, and the photographer leaves at 3.30pm. That is three and a half hours. It is shorter than the half-day band. The row to set it against is the one for pages that state 1 or 2 hours: about £450, from 511 packages, with prices running from about £350 to £597. A further 274 packages described an elopement or a register office and stated no hours, so they were left out of the £450 figure.

A five-hour afternoon. The photographer arrives at 11am, the ceremony is at 1pm, the meal starts at 2pm and the photographer stays for the entrance and the cake, then leaves at 4pm. That is five hours, the top of the half-day band. Speeches after 4pm, and anything in the evening, sit outside it. Between the top of this band (5 stated hours) and the bottom of the full-day band (7 stated hours) there is a gap. A quote for 6 hours sits between those two rows. How to read an hourly rate shows one way to test a 6-hour quote against an 8-hour quote.

A real register office, priced by the room

Newcastle's Civic Centre shows why the room changes the photography, not just the council bill. The council's venue page gives the address as Banqueting Hall, Civic Centre, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 8QH. Room rules are on the Civic Centre ceremony page. Fees are on the venue and ceremony room fees page. The phone number printed for booking is 0191 2787878.

Approved venueThe fee page lists the venue fee separately from the rooms above.By day of the week£555 Monday to Wednesday. £650 Thursday to Saturday. £750 on Sundays and bank holidays.

Each of those ceremony fees includes one copy of the marriage or civil partnership certificate. On the same fees page, under a heading for the Carliol Room, the Leazes Room and approved venues, the council lists a non-refundable booking fee of £45, an administration fee of £45 to change a booking, and a non-refundable deposit of £80.

A 9am Register Office slot, couple and two witnesses, then a few photographs outside, lines up with the 1-or-2-hour photography figure of about £450. Adding the council fee of £74.50 gives £524.50. A Saturday in the Leazes Room is £270, and a half-day photography figure of about £850 on top of it gives £1,120. Both sums add a published council fee to a survey figure. They are worked examples, so the council fee and the photography figure sit side by side. Other councils publish different rooms. Other councils' room fees are set out in what a registry office wedding costs in the UK. Photographers who cover the city are listed for Newcastle upon Tyne.

An album on a short booking

Where pages list a printed album as an extra, it is about £350, from 734 prices, running from about £250 to £450. Add that to the half-day figure: £850 plus £350 is £1,200. A full day sits around £1,500, and the middle of that list runs from £1,195 to £1,900. So a 4-or-5-hour booking plus a printed album lands near the lower end of a full day, while the hours stay short.

The difference between £1,200 and £1,500 is £300. That £300 is the gap between those two figures. The hours are still different. A full day in this survey is 7 or more stated hours, or a package the page calls a full day when the hours were not verified. Buy the album if you want the bound prints. Buy the longer day if you want the photographer still there for the evening. The UK cost page keeps the rows apart so the hours stay visible.

The registrar's clock is separate

A five-hour photography booking leaves the legal notice where it was. In England and Wales, GOV.UK's give-notice page sets a minimum of 29 days between the notice and the ceremony. The page's own dates are a signature on 1 May and a ceremony from 30 May onwards. The wedding also has to happen in the 12 months after the notice. The appointment is at the register office for a district, and the residence test on that page is the previous 7 days. Partners who live in two districts each sign at their own office, on one day or on two. Where one partner is from outside the UK, the page says when you attend together and lists the exceptions for citizenship and status. Anglican weddings can follow another path. GOV.UK tells you to ask the venue.

In Scotland, National Records of Scotland's registering page, updated 20 May 2026, says you submit notice in advance. The fees, forms and documents section sets the notice at £45 per person. The registrar or the celebrant confirms the fee for conducting the ceremony. Each of you completes an M10 for a marriage, or a CP10 for a civil partnership, plus the celebrant and witness details form. With those forms you send a birth certificate or an adoption certificate, evidence of usual residence such as a utility bill no older than three months, and a valid passport or another document showing nationality. The statutory timing is set out in how to elope in Scotland. The England and Wales route is in how to elope in the UK.

Book the photographer once the registrar has given you a time. The notice periods above apply to a two-hour booking and to a five-hour booking alike.

Wording for a five-hour quote

Swap in your own date, and put your ceremony time in the first line.

Subject: Five hours on 18 September 2027, plus a price for one more hour

Hello,

Our ceremony is at 1pm on Friday 18 September 2027 at [register office or venue, town]. We would like a photographer from 12.15pm to 5.15pm, covering preparations, the ceremony, one short group, and portraits.

Please price those five hours. Please also price one further hour, in case we ask you to stay for the speeches, and any travel charge to [second address]. If a printed album is not inside the five-hour price, please give its price on a separate line. For each option, tell us the arrival time and the time you would leave.

Thank you,

[Names]

Check the day against the clock

  • The ceremony time the registrar or the venue has confirmed.
  • The arrival and the departure you are asking the photographer for, written as clock times, not as "half a day".
  • A second address, if portraits happen away from the ceremony.
  • Whether speeches, the cake and the meal are inside those hours.
  • The names in the formal group, so the group has a length.
  • Album inside the price, or listed beside it.
  • The council fee kept on the council's invoice, not folded into the photographer's figure.

Questions

Does a shorter photography booking change the legal notice?

No. In England and Wales, GOV.UK sets a minimum of 29 days between the notice and the ceremony, and the wedding has to happen in the 12 months after the notice. In Scotland, National Records of Scotland says you submit notice in advance, at £45 per person. A two-hour booking and a five-hour booking leave those rules as they are.

Where does a six-hour quote sit?

Outside both package rows. The half-day row keeps pages that state 4 or 5 hours. The full-day row keeps 7 or more stated hours, or a package the page calls a full day when the hours were not verified. Six stated hours sit between the two rows. Divide the quote by 6 and compare that hourly result with about £175 an hour, which is explained in the hourly-rate guide.

What should the quote say about the finish time?

A clock time for arrival and a clock time for leaving. "Half day" on its own is not one of the survey's rows. The £850 figure is for packages that state 4 or 5 hours, from 836 prices collected on 4 October 2026.
