The Merchants Suite, or the statutory signing
Up to 31 March 2027, a statutory marriage or civil partnership at Chester Register Office is £62. An enhanced ceremony in the Merchants Suite is £192 Monday to Thursday, £240 on Friday, and £298 on Saturday. The certificate is £12.50 on top of those fees. A non-refundable booking fee of £56, rising to £100 on 1 April 2026, is taken when you book and deducted from the final amount.
Send the room name, the day and the start time. A Saturday in the Merchants Suite at £298 is a different job from the £62 signing. One or two hours often covers a short register-office signing and a few pictures outside. If you are at the Town Hall, say so, because venue hire there is paid to the hall and sits outside these registrar fees. If the registrars come to an approved venue, attendance from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 starts at £414 Monday to Thursday between 8am and 6pm. Name that venue. If the meal is somewhere else, put the second address in the quote.
How many hours should we book for the £62 signing?
One or two hours is often enough for the statutory ceremony and a few pictures outside. Say the start time, and say if you go on to the Town Hall or to a meal. The £12.50 certificate is the council's extra. It is separate from the photographer.
What should we allow for the Merchants Suite on a Thursday?
The enhanced ceremony is £192 Monday to Thursday, £240 on Friday and £298 on Saturday, up to 31 March 2027. Tell the photographer the day, how long you want in the room, and whether you want portraits outside afterwards.
Does the £56 booking fee belong in the photography quote?
The £56, or £100 from 1 April 2026, is deducted from the council's ceremony amount. Ask the photographer to price the hours, and any journey, separately. Name the room so the £62 signing and the Merchants Suite stay distinct.
Who do we pay if the ceremony is at the Town Hall?
Venue hire for the Town Hall is paid to the hall. The register office table is a separate charge. Tell the photographer if the pictures are at the hall, in the Merchants Suite, or in both places.
What if the registrars come to an approved venue between 8am and 6pm?
From 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, attendance starts at £414 Monday to Thursday between 8am and 6pm. Send the venue address, say if you are inside that daytime band, and ask for the quote to use those hours plus any second address.
